Adjustable sit-stand tables in office settings: development of a system for controlled posture changes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sit-stand tables have been suggested to increase variation and prevent disorders among office workers. However, it is a challenge to ensure their proper use. Therefore, we developed a system reminding workers to change the height of their sit-stand table at regular intervals. The system consists of three devices: (1) table legs that can be controlled in height by an electric drive; (2) remote control for basic settings; (3) remote control with software allowing the user an ongoing interaction with the table. The entire system is controlled through the worker’s computer, and can be programmed to rise and lower the desk at pre-set intervals. Furthermore, the software stores two variables describing the use of the table during a full workday, i.e. time proportions of each table position, and the frequency of position changes.

Breaking up workplace sitting time with intermittent standing bouts improves fatigue and musculoskeletal discomfort in overweight/obese office workers.
OBJECTIVES To examine whether the introduction of intermittent standing bouts during the workday using a height-adjustable workstation can improve subjective levels of fatigue, musculoskeletal discomfort and work productivity relative to seated work. METHODS Overweight/obese office workers (n=23; age 48.2±7.9 years, body mass index 29.6±4 kg/m(2)) undertook two, 5-day experimental conditions ...
متن کاملEvaluation of ergonomic and education interventions to reduce occupational sitting in office-based university workers: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND Prolonged sitting is a specific occupational hazard in office workers. There is growing evidence that prolonged sitting is detrimental to metabolic health. The aim of this study is to determine whether providing office workers with education along with adjustable sit-stand workstations leads to reduction in sitting behavior. METHODS/DESIGN A randomized control trial (RCT) with thre...
متن کاملIterative development of Stand Up Australia: a multi-component intervention to reduce workplace sitting
BACKGROUND Sitting, particularly in prolonged, unbroken bouts, is widespread within the office workplace, yet few interventions have addressed this newly-identified health risk behaviour. This paper describes the iterative development process and resulting intervention procedures for the Stand Up Australia research program focusing on a multi-component workplace intervention to reduce sitting t...
متن کاملEffect of a novel two-desk sit-to-stand workplace (ACTIVE OFFICE) on sitting time, performance and physiological parameters: protocol for a randomized control trial
BACKGROUND Prolonged sitting is ubiquitous in modern society and linked to several diseases. Height-adjustable desks are being used to decrease worksite based sitting time (ST). Single-desk sit-to-stand workplaces exhibit small ST reduction potential and short-term loss in performance. The aim of this paper is to report the study design and methodology of an ACTIVE OFFICE trial. DESIGN The st...
متن کاملDesk-based workers’ perspectives on using sit-stand workstations: a qualitative analysis of the Stand@Work study
BACKGROUND Prolonged sitting time has been identified as a health risk factor. Sit-stand workstations allow desk workers to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the working day, but not much is known about their acceptability and feasibility. Hence, the aim of this study was to qualitatively evaluate the acceptability, feasibility and perceptions of using sit-stand workstations in ...
